A horror story to out-do all other horror stories
I have a confession to make: I eat GMOs, and I’m not afraid. I know I’m safe, and I know the food I eat will not only nourish my body, but support the farmers that made it with a little hard work and probably more than a few swear words. Farming is hard, people!
So to start, I’m going to give you some info on genetic modification and exactly what it is. Please note I am getting this information from the USDA, so you know it’s legit.
FIRST: Genetic modification and genetic engineering are the same thing. Just an FYI.
Here is what the USDA defines genetic engineering as: “Genetic engineering is a precise and predictable method used to introduce new traits into plants and animals by moving genes and other genetic elements from one or more organism(s) into a second organism.”
Basically, you take an element from one plant and put it in another. Those elements are most often genes. Like the kind of stuff that is in every living thing ever. And this happens before the plant even grows, so pictures of syringes injecting your food are completely misleading.
So why the heck are we all so anti-GMO?
As far as I can tell, no published evidence has been able to prove that GMOs cause harm to humans. When I find someone that can prove that genetic modification has harmed or killed another person, I will jump on the NO GMO bandwagon. But until then, I will focus on all the good it does.
If you go to the U, you probably recognize the name Norman Borlaug. He was this really smart guy that created a type of wheat that could keep more people from starving in third world countries. And how did he do this? GMOs. Check out his Wikipedia page for more details.
This is how GMOs work. They make a good gene in a specific food stronger. For corn, it can be anything from larger ears to stronger stalks. In other crops like wheat and soybeans, it can be resistance to drought or high winds. Even the USDA says, “Crops with the ability to grow in salty soils or better withstand drought conditions are also in the works and the first such products are just entering the marketplace. Such innovations may be increasingly important in adapting to or in some cases helping to mitigate the effects of climate change.”
A really smart person once told me that GMOs harm about as many people as vaccines cause autism. No one can prove it, but everyone is afraid of it. No well-informed person is going to potentially expose their child to the measles by not vaccinating them, are they? Nope.
So why are we protesting GMOs? Fighting this wave of new technology is like pretending your Android is still cool. Cut it out. And educate yourself! Here are some good places to find reliable information on what GMOs really are, and what they were made to do:
